In 1986, the EPA finalized and passed new pollution standards laws for air
tight wood stoves. Many of our customers are still confused about this issue.
Basically, the new laws apply only to freestanding and built-in space
heaters which burn wood in a controlled manner (so-called air
tight stoves). The standards call for these appliances to be able
to burn very cleanly, up to 10 times cleaner than older stoves. They also
must burn cleanly at all settings, from very low to very high. Certain
Solid Fuel appliances are exempt from these standards. Coal stoves, open
fireplaces, cook stoves and all central heating units are not required
to meet these standards.
If you already have a wood stove, don't worry! All existing stoves and
grandfathered and allowed to be used. The law only applies
to manufacturers and retailers. Still, it is smart to upgrade your system
to a more efficient model whenever possible. This will help us all clean
the air and make better use of our resources.
HS-TARM Excel and Solo Plus boilers would easily meet or exceed
these standards. In fact, the country of Sweden (where HS-TARM is
a big seller), has strict standards on the pollution and efficiency of
boilers. Although our MB-Solo series is not as clean as the Excel and
Solo Plus boilers, MB-Solos are still the best available of their type.
Much time and effort is invested in the design and engineering of all
our Central Heating Systems so you can get the most heat from the
least amount of wood.
The Chart below shows the amount of smoke and pollution (figures in grams
of smoke) released into the air to produce an output of 100,000 BTU, enough
to heat a large home for 1 or 2 hours. A gram of smoke is roughly the
amount produced by a cigarette. Compare for yourself how an HS-Tarm
boiler is the cleanest solution.
